Former Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini will coach Inter Milan for a second spell, the Italian Serie A club have confirmed.
The announcement came few hours after the news about the dismissal of his predecessor Walter Mazzarri broke out. The 49-year-old, who left Turkish outfit Galatasaray in June, first coached the club between 2004 and 2008.
Mancini won three consecutive Scudetos and two Coppa Italia titles in his first spell at the Estadio Guiseppe Meazza. He also led City to the Premier League title in 2012 as well as winning the FA Cup in his first season in England.
Mancini Returns for a Second Spell With InterHe will be presented to the media at a press conference on Saturday afternoon at the club’s Appiano Gentile training ground.
Inter owner, Erick Thohir, said in a statement: “Today I made the difficult decision to dismiss Walter Mazzarri as head coach. It was a decision that I reached in conjunction with my management team. It was a difficult decision because he has been continuously supportive of the direction that we have wanted to take the club, and he has worked tirelessly and selflessly for Inter, with both belief and passion.
“I would like to thank him sincerely for his efforts. However, our goal is to regain our rightful position as one of the very top clubs in Europe and that’s why I am so happy to welcome back Roberto Mancini. His track record both at Inter and elsewhere speaks for itself, and his experience and hunger for success will drive the team to the next level.”
Inter are ninth in the Serie A table, 12 points behind league leaders Juventus after just four wins from 11 league games so far.
Despite a disappointing domestic campaign, Inter top their Europa League group with an unbeaten record from four matches.
