Kano government says it spends N70m weekly to feed primary school pupils

The Kano State government says it spends N70 million weekly to feed public primary school pupils in the state. The acting governor of the state, Hafiz Abubakar, said the expenditure is aside N68 million the government spends weekly on boarding schools.

He made the disclosure on Wednesday when he received the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sunusi II, on the emir’s traditional Sallah homage to Government House, Kano.

Mr. Hafiz noted that the feeding program was an arrangement involving the state, local governments and host communities of schools. The acting governor however lamented that the local governments and host communities have not always come up with their parts of the contribution.

Mr. Hafiz said the state government has even been releasing about N700million every month to the local governments to ensure they pay their workers’ salaries and meet running cost.

He further disclosed that the state also pays N300million as scholarship to students studying in Nigeria and abroad.

The acting governor said the state government plans to recruit 1000 officers to compliment house to house enforcement of sanitation in communities around the state. He also revealed that the state was poised to complete an independent power project this year.

Mr. Hafiz said despite its numerous commitments, Kano remained one of the few states in the country not defaulting in salary payment.

In his remarks, the emir urged government at federal and state levels to seek advice from economic experts on way out of the current economic hardship in Nigeria.

He said the economic problem was surmountable if government followed good expert advice. He urged Nigerians to support and pray for their leaders to enable them deliver on their promises.

President Buhari - 5,000 Naira payment to unemployed youth is not my priority

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that he has a different priority other than to pay N5,000 to the unemployed Nigerians as had been promised.

He made the remark in Saudi Arabia as he continued his visit to the Middle East over the weekend. He said he would rather channel resources into the building of infrastructure, education, agriculture and mining to create employment opportunities for able bodied young men.

He said:

"This largesse N5,000 for the unemployed, I have got a slightly different priority. I would rather do the infrastructure, the school and correct them and empower agriculture, mining so that every able bodied person can go and get work instead of giving 5,000 to those who don't work."

The promised to pay N5,000 monthly stipend to the most vulnerable in the society was a major plank of the presidential campaign of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) last year.

The president has also called for better conditions for Nigerians undertaking the pilgrimage to the holy land of Saudi Arabia and has consequently directed directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Hajj Commission (NAHCON) to sit down with the Saudis to negotiate improved terms and conditions for our pilgrims performing the Umrah and the annual Hajj.

His remark followed the completion of talks with rulers of the Saudi Arabia and the acceptance by the Saudi government to freely and openly discuss outstanding issues with Nigeria.

So it is a great honour to all of us to return here after decades and celebrate this 50th anniversary. We are benefiting from the vision planted years ago. 

I want to assure the principal that we are going to bring back the good old days of this school. I wish all the students well and pray that you all be better and more successful than all of us here today. 

I like to say a big welcome to seniors and juniors. One great thing about this school is that no matter what you become in life your senior remains your senior.”

NECO Releases Results, Over 50% Pass English, Mathematics

The National Examinations Council has released the November/December 2014 results with the examination body saying there is remarkable improvement when compared its previous examinations.

The results show 52.94 per cent credit pass in English Language and 55.37 per cent credit pass in Mathematics.

Registrar and the Chief Executive Officer of NECO, Prof. Promise Nwachukwu Okpala, while announcing the results at the council’s national headquarters in Minna, Niger State, on Wednesday, noted that the results were an improvement on the previous exams conducted between 2011 and 2014.

Okpala said that 63,445 candidates registered for the examinations, out of which 61,386 actually sat for the papers with 30.57 per cent of the candidates recording five credits and above.

An analysis of the other core subjects showed that 53,848 candidates sat for Biology with 26,947 pass credit level, representing 50.04 per cent; Chemistry had 28,250 candidates with 14, 858 pass at credit level, representing 51.62 per cent; 28,222 sat for Physics with 57 pass at credit level, representing 0.20 per cent.

Also, 1,753 candidates sat for Further Mathematics and 395 passed at credit level, representing 22.53 per cent; and Agricultural Science had 41,080 candidates with 12,006 pass at credit level, representing 29.22 per cent.

The registrar said 620 cases of malpractices were recorded.

Ido, who she gained admission to study medicine at UNIUYO at the age of 15, said she's trilled to be the best graduating student and is looking forward to serving humanity.
