A suspected kidnapper arrested by a mob in Ikere, headquarters of Ikere Local Government Area of Ekiti State, on Sunday, was burnt to death before the police could arrive at the scene.
Sources in the town informed the Nigerian Tribune in Ado Ekiti that the incident occurred at the Ori Audu area of the town, and was triggered by a suspicious commercial motorcyclist, who had conveyed the suspect to the area.
The source said the suspect, who he said was a male, allegedly carried a bag that was dripping with blood and was therefore accosted.
The source further alleged that “they found that he had a freshly dismembered body of a child in the bag and they therefore didn’t wait for the police or hand him over to them.”
The source also claimed that the suspect told those who arrested him that there were six of them with the same mission scattered around towns in the state.
However, the Ekiti State police command in reaction to the ‘jungle justice’ decried the action and warned citizens of the state against such on any suspected criminal.
The Public Relations Officer of the Ekiti police command, Mr Victor Babayemi, who reacted to the burning of the suspect, said the command would deal with whoever was found culpable of such tendency.

In a related development, the police have also arrested a middle-aged woman, Mrs Lola Adebayo for allegedly inflicted bodily injuries on her 9- year old house help, Blessing Akinyemi.
Babayemi said Mrs Adebayo, who lives in Ekute Area of Ado Ekiti, was arrested on Saturday and detained at Ekute Police Station, for allegedly beating up Blessing and starved her of food for almost a day.
A Commissioner with the Ekiti State Local Government Service Commission, Mrs Omotunde Adelabu, recounted to journalists that she saw the tattered-looking girl wandering about the streets, and revealed upon interrogation how she was allegedly brutalised by Mrs Adebayo, over an offence she committed.

“The action is condemnable and regrettable. There is no jungle justice in the Nigerian Laws. It is a barbaric action for people to kill and set ablaze a suspect without resorting to the security agencies. This would not be tolerated.”The Police Spokesman revealed that the Command has commenced investigation into the matter in an attempt to unravel the identities of the suspect and those that perpetrated the dastardly act.
